Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak is located at the eastern tip of Jeju Island, standing at an altitude of 182 meters. It was formed by a submarine volcanic eruption about 100,000 years ago. In fact, it is a towering rock standing on the coastline, with a huge circular crater at its top. The crater has a diameter of 600 meters, a depth of 90 meters, and an area of over 80,000 square meters. 99 sharp rocks surround the crater, making the entire mountain look like a huge crown left on the seashore.
The peak has cliffs on its southeast and north sides, while the northwest side is a grassy ridge that connects to Seongsan Village. As the ridge is covered with grass, it is suitable for both walking and horseback riding. The experience of watching the sunrise from the top of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak is absolutely stunning and unforgettable. In spring, the rape flowers nearby bloom in a golden yellow, and watching the sunrise in this period is an even more wonderful experience.
Due to its unique geological structure and beautiful natural environment, Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak was designated as a local natural monument on July 19, 2000, and was listed as a World Natural Heritage by UNESCO in 2007.
