Insadong

Insadong is located in Jongno District, Seoul. It generally refers to the area from Yulgok-ro in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace to Tapgol Park. It is centered around the main street, with many alleys crisscrossing and densely distributed around it like a spider web. Hidden in these alleys are many famous places in Insadong.

During the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), this area was home to government officials and the private residences of the noble class. During the Japanese occupation of Korea (1910-1945), antique shops began to emerge here, and it gradually developed into a cultural district for trading cultural goods.

Today, Insadong houses over 40% of South Korea's antique shops. Compared to other ancient art streets, it mainly sells high-value items. Since the 1970s, more than 70 galleries have emerged. The galleries are comprehensive cultural venues that showcase various styles of artworks, including ancient and modern art pieces, and also sell the exhibited items. They usually have affiliated art stores as well.

In Insadong, you can purchase a wide range of ancient and modern artworks, as well as Hanbok (traditional Korean clothing), ceramics, various handicrafts, and other souvenirs. There is a widely circulated saying that vividly describes it: "In Insadong, you can buy the 'culture' of Korea!"

Another pleasure of strolling through Insadong is the traditional Korean restaurants and tea houses tucked away in its alleys. These establishments, which retain the distinctive style and charm of Korea, are hidden deep within this modern metropolis and are popular among both locals and foreign tourists.
