Jogyesa Temple is located in the bustling Jongno District in the heart of Seoul, right next to the famous Insadong District.
Founded in 1395, it holds a significant position in the Korean Buddhist community. The main hall, Daeungjeon Pavilion, was rebuilt in 1938 and is larger and more magnificent than Gyeongbokgung Palace's Geunjeongjeon Hall. Inside, there is a statue of Buddha Sakyamuni. The seven-story stone pagoda in front of the main hall was built in the 1930s and houses the Buddha's relics, which were brought to Korea from Sri Lanka by Dhammapala in 1914.
The locust tree in front of the main hall is 26 meters tall, and the white pine tree is nearly 500 years old. These two ancient trees add a serene atmosphere and a sense of historical weight to this ancient temple.
Every May around the Buddha's birthday, Jogyesa Temple holds the Yeon Deung Hoe, also known as the Lotus Lantern Festival, which is the largest Buddhist festival in Korea. Jogyesa Temple also offers a "Temple Stay" program for foreign tourists to experience Buddhist culture.
