The Changdeokgung Palace is located in Jongno District, Seoul. It is one of the five major palaces in Seoul. Built in 1405 after Gyeongbokgung Palace, it served as a secondary palace for the kings of the Joseon Dynasty. In the later period of the Joseon Dynasty, it replaced Gyeongbokgung Palace and was used as the main palace for a long time.
The palaces and pavilions of Changdeokgung Palace were designed in accordance with the natural terrain, making it the most natural-looking palace among the Joseon palaces and also the best-preserved one. The entire Changdeokgung Palace covers an area of 40.5 hectares, with the rear garden taking up 30 hectares.
In December 1997, Changdeokgung Palace and Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon were designated as World Cultural Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
