There are two ancient observatories on the Korean Peninsula, namely the Chomsongdae. One is located in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province in the southeast of South Korea, and the other is in Kaesong, on the southern border of North Korea. Both Gyeongju and Kaesong have a glorious history. From 57 BC to 935 AD, Gyeongju was the capital of the ancient Silla Kingdom and the cradle of ancient Korean civilization, leaving behind numerous cultural relics and historic sites.
The Chomsongdae in Gyeongju is situated in the city center and was built in 634 AD. It is the oldest astronomical structure on the Korean Peninsula. The Chomsongdae is 9.17 meters high, with a stone base that is 5.35 meters on each side. It is composed of 362 stones, each about 30 centimeters in size, and has 27 layers. It was mainly used to observe solar eclipses and the movement of stars and other astronomical phenomena at that time.
