The Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond are located in the center of Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. They were a subsidiary palace of the Silla Kingdom and a large courtyard built by the Silla king in 674. In the early 1980s, archaeologists discovered fragments of a plaque inscribed with "Wolji" during excavations, confirming its historical name.
The Wolji Pond once had three small islands and twelve buildings along its banks. In the first half of the last century, the courtyard was severely damaged in the war. And until 1975, it was gradually renovated and restored. The current Wolji Pond is nearly circular and was rebuilt along the retaining wall stones. The Wolji Pond, which was used for hosting banquets for foreign dignitaries in ancient times, now only retains a quarter of its original size, including the Linhae Hall and the garden around the lotus pond.
The Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond are not only historical sites but also one of the sources of Gyeongju's night charm. Their night view is particularly beautiful under the moonlight.
