Passing through Bulguksa Temple and walking along the foothills of Toham Mountain (745 meters above sea level) for about 8 kilometers, you will come across Seokguram Grotto, which is almost at the summit of Toham Mountain.
Seokguram Grotto is made of natural rocks that have been polished and piled up. Its round roof is covered with soil, and the entire structure looks like a cave, hence its name. Inside the grotto is a statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, which was sculpted using Buddhist art techniques during the Unified Silla period in the 8th century. The statue, carved from granite and with an exterior as smooth and delicate as silk, exudes an expression that seems to eliminate all obstacles and temptations and bring about sudden enlightenment. Its expression and posture are elegant and lifelike, as if infused with boundless vitality, leaving viewers in awe.
It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with Bulguksa Temple in 1995.
