Daereungwon Tombs

Daereungwon is located in the city of Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. It is a cluster of tombs for the kings and nobles of the Silla Dynasty (57 BC - 935 AD), covering an area of 120,000 square meters. Currently, there are 23 large ancient tombs in the park. If the underground ones that are not visible are included, the number exceeds 200.

The most famous ones in Daereungwon are Cheonma Chong Tomb and Hwangnam Daechong tomb.

The Cheonma Chong was excavated in 1970. It was named so because the saddle pad unearthed from it was painted with a celestial horse. As the only painting work from the ancient Silla era over 1,500 years ago, it is very eye-catching. The Cheonma Chong is also the only ancient tomb in the Daereungwon that is open to the public inside. The interior of the royal tomb that is open to the public has become a museum, displaying 11,526 cultural relics. The unearthed royal crown has also been restored, allowing visitors to see the luxurious life of the ancient royal family.

Apart from the Cheonma Chong, another ancient tomb worth visiting is the Hwangnam Daechong. It is the largest ancient tomb in the Daereungwon. As a joint tomb for a couple, over 30,000 cultural relics and gold burial objects were unearthed here. The uniqueness of the Hwangnam Daechong lies in the fact that the burial objects in the wife's tomb are of higher quality. This indicates the relatively high social status of women in the Silla era.
