Imjingak is located on the banks of the Imjin River, about 56 kilometers northwest of Seoul and 7 kilometers south of the southern end of the Korean Demilitarized Zone. It was established in 1972 as a security tourism site by South Korea in the hope of the unification of the Korean Peninsula. It is a product of the Korean War between the North and the South.
The Imjingak Tourist Area mainly consists of the National Memorial Hall of the Korean War, the Imjingak Peace Sharing Park, the Peace Bell Pavilion, the Prayer Platform, the Freedom Bridge and various monuments and sculptures. Outside the Imjingak, there are 12 types of military equipment used in the war on display, including tanks and aircraft.
The Military Demarcation Line (MDL) between North and South Korea is 241 kilometers long and has 1,291 yellow boundary markers. The markers facing South Korea are inscribed in English and Korean, while those facing North Korea are written in Korean and Chinese. To prevent conflicts between the two sides, a 2,000-meter-wide Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is established on each side of the MDL.
The DMZ includes many scenic spots, mainly the Third Tunnel, Dora Observatory, Poju Unification Village, Panmunjom, etc., and is hailed as a world-class peace tourism destination. The Third Tunnel is located 73 meters underground. Tourists need to walk down a long sloping tunnel and can only bring a safety helmet. Standing on the Dora Observatory, one can see the blurry North Korea and feel the clear confrontation and tension. Panmunjom, officially known as the "Joint Security Area (JSA)", is a historic site where the two countries reached a ceasefire agreement in 1953 and held inter-Korean summit talks. It remains a sensitive area between the two countries to this day. Whether it is open to tourists depends on real-time information.
Matters need attention:
1. When visiting the 3rd Tunnel and Dora Observatory, tourists must go to the DMZ ticket office located in the parking lot of Imjingak with their passports to fill out an application and purchase tickets.
2. With the purchased tickets, they can take the free shuttle bus to visit the 3rd Tunnel, Dora Observatory, Dora Station, and Unification Village (Unification Village is sometimes closed) in sequence. There will be a military guide speaking Korean.
3. Foreign tourists are generally not allowed to travel independently and must join a tour group.
