Suwon Hwaseong Fortress

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was a new city built by the 22nd king of the Joseon Dynasty to show filial piety to his father and demonstrate economic strength. More importantly, the political purpose was to use it as a military stronghold south of the capital. Construction of the fortress began in 1794 and was completed in 1796, using very advanced design concepts and construction equipment at that time. The total length of the city wall is 5.52 kilometers, and it is equipped with various military facilities that cannot be seen in other cities.

Suwon Hwaseong is a unique flat mountain fortress form that cannot be found in China, Japan or elsewhere. It combines military defense and commercial functions, and its facilities are the most scientific and reasonable in terms of functionality and structure, making it a model of Eastern city walls. Notably, Suwon Hwaseong was constructed by scholars of the time through thorough research and meticulous planning, integrating the architectural techniques of both the East and the West. It also left behind complete and detailed construction records, holding significant architectural historical value.

In December 1997, UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage List.
