Heian Shrine

Heian Shrine is located in Kyoto City. It was built in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of Emperor Kammu's relocation of the capital to Heian-kyo. The architecture of Heian Shrine is a partial imitation of the buildings of the Heian period's imperial palace, but only two-thirds the size of the original. The expansive courtyard is centered around a pond and integrates the styles of gardens from various eras. Stone bridges, flowing streams, gravel paths, romantic cherry blossoms, and ancient pavilions all exude a natural and harmonious beauty.

One of the three major festivals in Kyoto, the "Heian Festival," is held here every year on October 22nd. On that day, citizens dressed in the characteristic costumes of the Heian period to the Meiji Restoration period set off from Heian Shrine and walk to the Kyoto Imperial Palace, depicting the prosperous history of the ancient capital of Japan.
