Kiso Valley

The Kiso Valley is a huge valley between the Hida Mountains and the Kiso Mountains. The Nakasendo (Kisoji, means "path through mountains"), surrounded by perilous mountains and steep peaks, was a major thoroughfare that developed as a vital transportation route connecting Edo (now Tokyo) and Kyoto from the 17th to the 19th century. This road, stretching over 70 kilometers, runs through Kiso-gun. Along the way, there are 11 post towns.

At the southern entrance of the Kisoji, Magome-juku still retains its old-fashioned grid-patterned houses along the stone-paved slope. To fully represent the street scene of the Edo period about 300 years ago, all the power lines have been buried underground, and not a single wire can be seen on the ground.

From Magome-juku, after climbing over the 801-meter-high mountain peak, you will arrive at Tsumago-juku. Due to a fire, it once declined, but since 1968, the entire town has been engaged in a preservation campaign, restoring the streets along the Kiso Road. Now, it has been selected as a National Important Traditional Buildings Group Preservation Area.

In the northern part of the Kiso Valley lies the well-preserved Narai-juku. Compared to other towns in the area, Narai-juku is the largest, with its main street stretching for 1 kilometer. At night, when the lanterns illuminate these ancient buildings, Narai-juku is at its most beautiful and charming.
