Otaru

The port city of Otaru was the commercial and trading center of Hokkaido a hundred years ago. Many stately stone buildings such as banks and trading companies that were built at that time still exist, forming a romantic urban landscape around the Otaru Canal. Some of these historical buildings have been transformed into hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops and glasswork studios. At night, gas lamps illuminate the paths along the warehouses and the canal, creating a beautiful scene.

The highest point in Otaru is the summit of Tengu Mountain, from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Ishikari Bay, Shiretoko Peninsula and Otaru city. This mountain peak towers over the city and is a popular ski resort in winter. You can take a cable car up the mountain to enjoy the scenery.
Otaru is famous for its numerous hot springs and fresh seafood. Be sure to visit a sushi restaurant near the port.
