The Imperial Palace of Japan is located in the central area of Tokyo, covering an area of approximately 17 hectares. It is the residence of the Emperor of Japan and his family members.
The entire Imperial Palace is surrounded by a moat, and it is divided into several areas, including the Imperial Residence, the Outer Garden, the East Garden, and the North Garden. Most of the Imperial Palace is hidden behind thick stone walls, ancient trees, and moats from the Edo period, and is generally not open to the public. The East Garden and the North Garden are often open to the public. Before entering the Imperial Palace, you pass through the Nijubashi Bridge, from where you can see the Shogunate Castle within the East Garden. It is a site of ancient fortifications and was the original castle observation deck.
