Lake Shikotsu

Lake Shikotsu is located in the southwestern part of Hokkaido, Japan, at the western end of Chitose City and about 40 kilometers south of Sapporo. Together with Lake Toya, it forms the two major lakes of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park.

Lake Shikotsu is a caldera lake formed about 40,000 years ago due to the volcanic eruptions of Mount Tarumae and Mount Fudarizan, which caused the ground to collapse. The lake covers an area of 78.4 square kilometers and has a shoreline of 40.4 km. The lake surface is at an altitude of 247 m, with an average depth of 265 m and a maximum depth of 363 m. It is the second deepest lake in Japan, second only to Lake Tazawako in Akita Prefecture.

Lake Shikotsu is the largest freshwater lake in Hokkaido, renowned for its pure water, rich ecology, and the hot springs and volcanic landscapes around it. It is a paradise for nature lovers, offering unique experiences such as boat tours, mountain climbing, and hot spring visits. In summer, tourists can take sightseeing boats, yachts, and speedboats to enjoy the lake. Mount Tarumae is an active volcano, from where you can admire the spectacular crater and the panoramic view of Lake Shikotsu. The path to the summit is steep but not too difficult, and it takes about an hour to reach the top.
