Kenrokuen Garden

Kanazawas the unchallenged main attraction is Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japans three most beautiful gardens along with Korakuen in Okayama and Kairakuen in Mito, and is regarded as the most beautiful among them.

Kenrokuen Garden initially served as the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle and was constructed by the Maeda family, the local ruling clan, in 1676 and spanned nearly two centuries before its completion. The garden was eventually opened to the public in 1871.

Kenrokuen is the epitome of ancient Japanese garden construction art. Its name comes from a work by a poet of the Song Dynasty (960 - 1127) in China. The author proposed that a perfect garden should simultaneously possess six essential attributes, referring to spaciousness, seclusion, artificiality, antiquity, abundant water and broad views. The literal meaning of Kenrokuen is Garden of the six sublimities.

There are over 150 kinds of plants including flowers and flowering trees in the garden. Throughout the four seasons, the colors change and the scenery is breathtaking. In spring, plum blossoms and cherry blossoms bloom one after another. In summer, the garden is full of greenery and dotted with flowers. In autumn, the red maple leaves are a beautiful sight. In winter, the snow adds a touch of serenity and beauty.

The Kenrokuen Garden also has many artistic details of garden design worth savoring. In the early Edo period, it was a tradition to use wooden poles and ropes to lift the branches of trees to protect them from being broken by the heavy snow in winter. The oldest fountain in Japan is also located in the garden. Built in the late Edo period, it ingeniously uses the height difference of the terrain to achieve a water spray height of 3.5 meters in the pond.
