Jigokudani Monkey Park

Yudanaka Onsen Town has a long history of hot springs. Despite many changes over the years, it remains true to its local mountain village roots. As soon as you step out of the train station, you can feel that you have entered an excellent hot spring resort. If you plan to stay here, you can enjoy various hot spring pools at the nearby Shibu Onsen, then return to a traditional Yudanaka Onsen inn, put on a yukata, have a drink, and get ready to enjoy a delicious and exquisite Japanese dinner. In this hot spring town, it's not just humans who enjoy soaking in the hot springs. Not far from the town, in the forest on the back mountain, Japanese macaques seem to be the ones who best know how to enjoy nature's gifts!

Jigokudani Monkey Park is one of the habitats of Japanese macaques. There are three paths leading to it from the town. Along the trail, it takes about 30 minutes to walk through the forest to reach this forest hot spring occupied by wild bathing monkeys. In winter, the valley where they live is covered with heavy snow, which is the best time for viewing. These monkeys that soak in hot springs in the snow are beloved by people and thus have earned a nickname "Snow Monkeys". There is no doubt that they are equally active and adorable in other seasons.
