Nozawa Onsen offers an old-fashioned Japanese atmosphere hot spring baths and a lively nightlife, yet it is just a few minutes away from the ski resort.
Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort is one of the largest and most renowned winter sports destinations in Japan, with snowfall exceeding 10 meters in winter. When Nagano hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics, many events were held here.
The ski slopes are located on the northwest side of the Yamabiko Mountain ( 1650 m ). On a clear day, you can enjoy the beautiful views of the Northern Japanese Alps and the Sea of Japan. The ski resort is open from late November to early May of the following year, depending on the snow conditions. During the green season, the ski resort also hosts great events such as mountain bike cross-country, tire slides, and zip lines.
The Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival, held every year on January 15th in winter, is the most famous festival dedicated to the Tōso-shin (a deity in the Hokuriku and Shinetsu regions). The event is lively and grand. In Japanese traditional culture, the ages of 25 and 42 for men are considered unlucky years. The Tōso-shin is believed to protect the village's men from harm during these so-called unlucky years. Therefore, the men in the village play a significant role in the festival.
