Zenkoji Temple

Zenkoji Temple is located beside Joyama Park in the urban area of Nagano City, 1.8 kilometers away from Nagano Station. It is the tourist center of Nagano, and visitors from all over Japan come here in a continuous stream to pay their respects.

Zenkoji Temple is said to have been founded in 644 and is one of the oldest temples in Japan. The main hall of the temple is designated as a National Treasure and is a wooden structure rebuilt in 1707, ranking third in size in Japan.
The main object of worship at the temple is said to be the oldest Buddhist statue in Japan. However, this temple is a non-sectarian temple that does not belong to any specific sect and is renowned worldwide for welcoming all people. It is a sacred place deeply revered by the Japanese people.

There are as many as 39 sub-temples within the temple grounds, known as "shukubo," where you can experience temple lodging. This is one of the unique features of the temple.
