Sensoji Temple

Sensoji Temple is the oldest temple in Tokyo and one of the most authentically "Edo-style" places of entertainment for the common people that still exist in Japan today. The temple's entrance is called "Kaminarimon"(means wind and thunder God gate), which is a symbol of both Japan and Asakusa district. The most famous aspect of Kaminarimon is the huge red lantern that hangs in front of the gate, which is very noticeable and adds a lot of grandeur to Sensoji Temple. Many tourists take pictures here as a souvenir.

There are many famous buildings and historical relics within the temple. In the southwest corner, there is a five-story pagoda, whose height is only second to the five-story pagoda of Toji Temple in Kyoto, making it the second tallest Buddhist pagoda in Japan. In the northeast corner of the temple, there is the Asakusa Shrine, with a graceful design and exquisite carvings. In general, Sensoji Temple is a historic and culturally rich temple, an important window into Japanese national culture. Don't miss this fascinating place when you visit Tokyo.
