Kanazawa has three tea house streets that have been preserved from the Edo period, namely Nishi Chaya District, Higashi Chaya District and Kazuemachi. Among them, the largest Higashi Chaya District was established in 1820 and has now been selected as an important traditional building group preservation area. On both sides of the stone-paved road, tea houses stand in rows, making it a high-end dining street that retains its former prosperity. Nishi Chaya District is small and tidy, with a stone-paved road stretching for about 100 meters, and it is the most popular tea house street with a common style. The beautiful street scene exudes an elegant and ancient Japanese atmosphere.
During the Edo period, Kanazawa was the fourth largest city in Japan, only after Edo, Osaka and Kyoto. Located on the coast of the Sea of Japan, it was remote and thus spared from the ravages of war several times from the Tokugawa shogunate to World War II, allowing a large number of Edo period streets and buildings to be preserved intact.
Many individuals consider Kyoto to be the city that most effectively embodies Japanese aesthetics. However, Kanazawa is also an ancient city with deep historical roots and a wealth of unique attractions; it simply lacks Kyoto's global renown. Nowadays, Kanazawa offers autumn foliage that is even more vibrant than Kyoto's, shops that surpass Tokyo's in terms of refinement, production of 99.99% of Japan's gold leaf, and world-class art museums. Additionally, the city boasts fewer tourists and a livelier everyday atmosphere than elsewhere.
