Itsukushima Shinto Shrine

Itsukushima Shinto Shrine, founded in 593 AD, has a history of over 1,300 years. The large torii gate standing in the sea in front of the shrine is one of the "Three Scenic Spots of Japan" and is the most famous landmark in Osaka. In 1996, the shrine and the primeval forest area on the mountain behind it were inscribed on the World Heritage List.

The shrine is located on the intertidal zone. When the tide rises, it looks as if the entire Shrine is floating on the sea. When it was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site, the beauty of the integration of its buildings and the natural environment was highly praised.
