Matsumoto Castle

Matsumoto Castle is located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It was built in 1504. As a typical flatland castle, it is the only one in Japan with a complex and connected structure of turrets centered around the main keep. Matsumoto Castle is one of the 12 existing castles in Japan that were constructed from the late Azuchi-Momoyama period to the Edo period. It is one of the four national treasure-level ancient castles designated by the Japanese government, along with Himeji Castle, Inuyama Castle and Hikone Castle.

The main keep has a five-story exterior and six floors inside, standing nearly 40 meters tall and constructed of wood. Due to the main building's black and white color scheme, local residents have given it a nickname, "Crow Castle". Despite over 400 years of wind and rain, it still stands firm. It has endured countless natural disasters and wars, but fortunately, it has been preserved to this day.

Passing through the wooden inner chambers of Matsumoto Castle that have been preserved to this day and climbing the steep stairs is a unique experience. The arrow slits on the castle walls and the medieval weapons and armor on display will remind you of scenes from ancient battles. From the observation deck on the top floor, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the entire city and the Northern Alps.
