Sapporo Clock Tower

The Sapporo Clock Tower, built in 1878, is regarded as the oldest building in Sapporo. Originally constructed by Americans as a rehearsal hall for the Sapporo Agricultural School (the predecessor of Hokkaido University), it is one of the few remaining American-style buildings in Hokkaido and serves as a symbol of the introduction of Western education to Japan in the 19th century and the period of Hokkaido's development. The chimes have been ringing for over 140 years, witnessing the remarkable development of Sapporo into the modern metropolis it is today.

This typical American-style clock tower is a masterpiece of East-West fusion and has become a famous landmark of Sapporo. Inside the Sapporo Clock Tower, there is a small exhibition about its history.
