Gion

Gion is the most famous geisha district in modern Japan, located in the Higashiyama District of Kyoto. It is divided into two areas: Gion Higashi and Gion Kobu. It is said that the Edo Shogunate first allowed tea houses to operate here in 1665, making it over three hundred years old. At its peak in the early 19th century, there were more than three thousand geishas in Gion. The Gion Higashi area still retains many traditional geisha houses, tea houses and other ancient Kyoto-style buildings, giving it a strong Edo atmosphere.

Hanamikoji-dori in Gion is the highest-class geisha district in Japan and was the filming location for the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha". The requirements for a qualified geisha are very high, and there are only about 120 geishas in Gion today. If you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a real geisha while strolling down Hanamikoji.

Besides Hanamikoji, Gion also has many other attractions worth visiting, such as the ancient Kenninji Temple, Yasaka Shrine, Chion-in and the Gion Oil Lamp Museum.
