Higashiyama Jishō-ji Temple

Higashiyama Jishō-ji Temple is located in the northeast of Kyoto City, 3 kilometers east of Kyoto Imperial Palace and the Heian Shrine. The garden of Jishō-ji Temple features a rock garden where sand and stones are raked into elegant arcs. The Zen master, Musō Soseki, was the pioneer of this art form. The temple's wooden roof with cypress bark is of the highest grade in Japanese architecture, matching that of the Imperial Palace.

Jishō-ji Temple, with its splendid architecture and garden art, Not only has it become the perfect existing version of the architecture of the Tang Dynasty in China, but also the magnificent style it represents, along with the kimono and kabuki, has become a brilliant symbol of the image of Japan. In 1994, the temple was inscribed on the World Heritage List as one of the "Cultural Properties of Ancient Kyoto".
