Karuizawa

Karuizawa is located in the central-southern part of Nagano Prefecture, at the foot of the active volcano Mount Asama, 130 kilometers away from Tokyo. It can be reached by high-speed train in just one hour. Known as "Tokyo's Backyard", it has been a representative summer resort in Japan since the late 19th century and has developed into the most famous luxury villa area and a gathering place for the upper class in Japan.

The town center is divided into two parts: Shin-Karuizawa and Kyu-Karuizawa.

Kyu-Karuizawa is the most prosperous and historically charming area of the entire Karuizawa, surrounded by the Mikasa Avenue and Ginza Street. The Ginza shopping street, which connects Kyu-Karuizawa and Shin-Karuizawa, is a brick-paved road about 600 meters long, with a large number of Western-style buildings from the Meiji and Showa periods preserved. The historic town center is home to numerous boutiques, cafes and restaurants, allowing visitors to enjoy shopping and dining for several days in a row. There are restaurants offering a wide variety of cuisines, from traditional Japanese to French, Nepalese and Iranian, creating a cosmopolitan street scene.

Naka-Karuizawa is a secondary town center four kilometers west of Kyu-Karuizawa. It is a great place for leisure shopping and dining. The restaurants, cafes and shops on Spring Elm Street are numerous and diverse. In Naka-Karuizawa, you can visit the unique Stone Church, which is a must-visit place for many architecture enthusiasts. When you come here, you will feel like you have entered a fairy tale rather than a church. The Stone Church is closed to the public when wedding ceremonies are held here.

Cycling is an easy way to explore the many attractions in Karuizawa and experience the trendy town atmosphere.
