Noboribetsu Jigokudani Valley

Noboribetsu Jigokudani Valley is a volcanic crater remnant in the mountain area of Noboribetsu, Hokkaido. It can be reached on foot from the Noboribetsu Onsen Town, and a specially built walkway leads to the inner part of the valley.

The valley floor is not large and is constantly filled with volcanic gases, with a strong smell of sulfur in the surrounding air. After the volcanic eruption, a unique volcanic terrain landscape was formed by the intrusion of lava into the surface. The grayish-white and brown rock layers, along with the reddish-brown soil layers around, are colorful and eerie. With many hot gases spurting out from underground, it creates a magical geological wonder. In spring and summer, the surrounding forests are lush and green, while in autumn, the mountains around are covered with red leaves, creating a stark contrast with the valley and offering plenty of attractions. In winter, it is covered with snow, and the valley, with the never-ending hot gases in the cold, presents another beautiful scene.

The Noboribetsu Onsen, which is supplied with water from Jigokudani, has various special water qualities and is a hot spring resort surrounded by primeval forests.
