Motomachi District

In the second half of the 19th century, Japan ended its long-term policy of isolation and established its first batch of trading ports, Hakodate being one of them. After Hakodate was opened as a port in 1859, Eastern and Western cultures converged here and flourished as never before.

Motomachi is located at the foot of Mount Hakodate. Within the old town, there are many well-preserved Western-style houses, former administrative office buildings and religious sites that were built in the 19th century. The most famous ones include the Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, the Hakodate Chinese Association Hall, the Former British Consulate, and three churches of completely different styles: the Russian Orthodox Church, the Motomachi Roman Catholic Church and St. John's Church.

Wandering through the European-style urban landscape of Motomachi, you will come across a scenic seaside city slope - Hachimanzaka. This slope, known as the most beautiful in Japan, is sure to make you stop and linger.
