Nijo Castle

Nijo Castle was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1603 and served as the shogun's residence in Kyoto. It was a symbol of the shogunate's power during the Edo period. Modelled after the Tang Dynasty's Chang'an City in China, it is surrounded by a 500-meter-long east-west and 400-meter-long north-south high stone wall and a moat. It is one of the most famous historical buildings in Kyoto. Nijo Castle is the premier cherry blossom viewing spot in Kyoto. The blooming seasons of plum blossoms and chrysanthemums are also great times to visit.
