Hōryū-ji Temple

Hōryū-ji Temple was built in 607 AD and covers an area of approximately 19 hectares. It has a history of over 1,400 years. There are more than 40 buildings within the temple complex, which represent the oldest architectural style in Japan and are masterpieces of wooden construction.

The temple houses hundreds of artistic treasures from the 7th and 8th century, including various architectural and cultural relics from the Asuka period, which showcase the integration of Chinese Buddhist architecture and Japanese culture. These buildings and Buddhism were introduced to Japan at the same time.

The Hōryū-ji temple complex and the nearby Yumedono (Dream Hall) were jointly inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1993 under the name "Hōryū-ji Area Buddhist Monuments".
