Isuien Garden

The Isuien Garden perfectly showcases the luxurious lifestyle of wealthy merchants during the Edo period (1603-1868) and the Meiji period (1868-1912). In those times, only the upper class of Japan could enter this garden with its magnificent scenery.

When the Isuien Garden was built, the concept of "shakkei" was carefully applied. Shakkei is a Japanese gardening or landscaping technique that enables the garden to blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape and natural environment. When visiting the Isuien Garden, please carefully observe the surrounding hills and the trees of Nara Park, and you will find that these natural scenes are perfectly integrated into the garden design.
