Kinkaku-ji Temple

The Kinkaku-ji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion, was converted from a nobleman's residence into a Zen temple in the early 15th century. The Golden Pavilion itself is a three-story building covered with gold leaf both inside and out. It was completely destroyed by fire in an accident in 1950 and was rebuilt and restored in 1955. In 1994, the entire Kinkaku-ji was designated as an important historical building within the "Cultural Properties of the Ancient Capital, Kyoto" by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
