The Kyoto Imperial Palace

The Kyoto Imperial Palace was the political and administrative center during the Heian period in Japan. For over 1,000 years, from 794 when the capital was moved from Nara to Kyoto until the Meiji Restoration in 1868, it served as the residence of successive emperors.

The Kyoto Imperial Garden has been destroyed and rebuilt many times. This imperial palace is 700 meters wide from east to west and 1,300 meters long from north to south, surrounded by walls. Inside the garden, pine and cypress trees alternate, and plum and cherry blossoms complement each other, creating a beautiful environment. It is only open to the public on limited days in spring and autumn each year. Visits on other days require prior application to the Imperial Household Agency.
